Cravens World Virtual Museum

The Cravens Collection Virtual Museum project is focused on increasing the accessibility of cultural heritage, facilitating object-based research with linked open data, and mobilizing the pedagogical value of museum collections with 3D technologies. The project uses high end structured light scanners – the Artec Space Spider and Artec Eva – as well as digital photogrammetry, to document the 1100 archaeological and ethnographic objects collected by the late Annette Cravens, during her lifetime of global travel.

The Cravens Collection
The Cravens Collection is the focus of a permanent exhibition at the University at Buffalo’s Anderson Gallery called The Human Aesthetic, which brings together objects from cultures around the world that date from 4500 BCE to the modern era. The exhibition space is designed with open storage cabinets to give visitors access to the entire collection, and a clear globe display, which allows visitors to view objects from all angles. The Cravens Collection Virtual Museum project builds on these ideas, by using 3D scanning technology to document objects from all angles, and using open linked data archiving to increase the global reach and public accessibility of the collection.

Digital Documentation
Digital documentation of the collection is carried out with handheld close range scanners: the Artec Space Spider (resolution up to 0.1mm) and Artec Eva (resolution up to 0.5mm). Scan data from the project is processed in house at CVAST, with Artec Studio 12 and GeoMagic Wrap software.

Accessibility
The Cravens Collection Virtual Museum Project is partnering with USF Libraries to create an open linked data archive. This will promote the global public accessibility of 3D data and models by using standardized data formats and web publishing to facilitate interoperability and integration of structured data. Each 3D model will be assigned a digital object identifier (DOI) assigning individual stable, permanent digital object identifier (DOI) labels to each 3D model generated by the project. Processed models can also be viewed online, at SketchFab.

Education
The Cravens Collection is a valuable educational tool for archaeologists, ethnographers and museum professionals. Dr. Harrison and CVAST have partnered with the University at Buffalo Art Galleries, to create a virtual museum that will allow users to explore the collection in the context of the Human Aesthetic globe and open storage exhibition. In addition, Dr. Harrison routinely leads educational workshops on 3D data capture and processing in the context of collection management, curatorial research, and outreach initiatives.
